Good morning, Yakima. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 10th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Yakima Valley Libraries has proposed raising Naches Library’s annual cost from $20,000 to $55,410.55, which gives the town three options to either keep the library open with city maintenance, close the branch and use bookmobile service, or end the library partnership. Residents are now planning a Friends of the Library group and exploring grant funds—next steps will be discussed at a board meeting on Sept. 22—.  KIMA
  • Food banks in Yakima are feeling the pinch after a bill signed on July 4 cut federal funding for food programs—causing local centers to see higher demand and forcing them to limit services like holiday food boxes and early closures when supplies run low.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Clyde Edger Nichols, a World War II veteran from Onalaska who has lived in the Yakima Valley for decades, celebrated his 100th birthday on Tuesday in a ceremony by the Yakima American Legion—honoring his service as a POW in the Battle of the Bulge. He is also remembered for his love of fishing and his simple advice to take time off work.  KIMA

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Inland Lighting — a long-time store on Yakima Avenue since 1956 — may close due to a tough local economy and online shopping, and owner Jim Engebretson is holding a liquidation sale. He is open to selling the business to save this local landmark.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

The work will continue with a one-lane reduction in each direction from Sept. 15th to Sept. 26th and further intermittent closures during the week of Sept. 29th, while crews work from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.  FOX 41

HEALTH NEWS

  • A CDC report revealed that Chagas disease spread by the kissing bug may be becoming endemic in the U.S with locally acquired cases reported in eight states and the insect now found in 32 states, especially in Texas. Experts urged residents to use bug repellent and seal homes—since there is no vaccine available.  FOX 41
  • A new study found that Medicaid expansion increased buprenorphine prescriptions by more than 27% in states that expanded coverage while states that did not saw a slight decline, helping people with opioid addiction access treatment. Researchers warned that strict Medicaid rules could slow progress as federal measures continue to ease access to opioid therapy.  FOX 41
