  • Yakima’s YWCA will host its annual Power of the Purse fundraiser on October 3 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Valley Mall in Union Gap to help domestic violence victims, as Yakima leads the state in such cases — funds raised will support women and children who need assistance.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • A curious and large cat is young and playful and is the adoptable pet of the week in Yakima — it is looking for a forever home. Local shelters offer a chance to bring this pet into a new family — interested adopters can call for more details.  KIMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Veterinarian Jan Pol visited East Valley High School today to talk with students about his 55-year career caring for animals ahead of his scheduled appearance at the Central Washington State Fair tomorrow—this first Washington visit included sharing stories of his work with farm and wild animals and receiving gifts from students and staff. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yakima County library system officials announced plans to cancel long-standing service contracts with Mabton, Granger, Naches and Tieton by providing written notice by Oct. 1 — the move will lead to higher fees next year and the Tieton library is set to close. Negotiations for new contracts continue with Mabton, Granger and Naches as city officials work on funding options.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • After strong community backlash at a September 24 meeting, the Yakima Health Board retracted a letter that called unlicensed food vendors a dangerous and violent criminal enterprise—critics said the language unfairly targeted immigrant communities. Commissioner Kyle Curtis said he will meet with community stakeholders to redraft the letter for presentation at the October meeting.  KIMA
  • The Department of Natural Resources is awarding about $29 million in federal grants to four wildfire prevention and forest restoration projects in eastern and central Washington—one grant of nearly $9.7 million from the Colombia Land Trust will reduce hazardous fuel conditions on the Yakama Indian Reservation.  NonStopLocal

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Canadian study found that nearly 25% of seniors aged 60 and older who had poor well-being recovered to an optimal state within three years. The study showed that those with strong psychological and emotional health were almost five times more likely to bounce back.  FOX 41

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Many Yakima residents have seen their property values jump by over $100,000 as sales set higher market prices that have nearly doubled since 2014, according to the county assessor. One homeowner with a 1.14 acre lot and a four-bedroom house with three garages said that an 18 acre parcel sold for $1.8 million—raising worries for those on fixed incomes.  KIMA
