  • Yakima is set to host the West Valley Fire Truck Visit on Saturday, October 11, from 10 am to 2 pm at 7200 W Nob Hill Blvd—children can meet real firefighters, see a fire truck up close, and greet Sparky the firedog.   • A new health care hub in Selah is being built by Howard’s Drug owners — it will bring together a pharmacy, doctor's office, dentist and eye care to improve local care and is set to finish in April.  KIMA

  • Two Starbucks stores in Yakima closed at 602 E. Yakima Ave. and 1312 S. First St. amid a nationwide plan to cut underperforming locations. Painted-over logos and papered windows signal the closures while affected employees are offered severance packages.  Yakima Herald-Republic

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Firefighters from many states are staying at a camp near Naches as they work 14-day shifts fighting the Wildcat Fire that has burned over 11,600 acres in the William O. Douglas Wilderness— the camp provides meal tents, mobile showers, and a post office to support crews on long shifts. Hundreds of workers help run the camp’s supplies and equipment to keep the fire-fighting efforts strong.  Yakima Herald-Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal leaders met yesterday at the White House but did not reach an agreement as lawmakers near a shutdown that could result in unpaid federal workers and temporary impacts on local agencies. Yakima officials confirmed TSA screeners will keep working—while state agencies and transportation leaders prepare for potential delays in federal funding.  NonStopLocal
  • Sunnyside City Council unanimously extended interim city manager Jim Bridges’ contract for six months in a special meeting Monday—keeping his current $462 per day rate. The decision follows the termination of former City Manager Mike Gonzalez without cause and will provide stability through the election and budget process.  Yakima Herald-Republic

HEALTH NEWS

  • Yakima’s Astria Health officials recommend that women begin doing self-exams in their early 20s and start yearly mammograms at age 40 to catch breast cancer early, which raises the 5-year survival rate for localized cases to 99%.   • A study from Queen Mary University of London shows early signs of multiple sclerosis like numbness, vision changes, memory trouble, pain and anxiety are similar for everyone regardless of background—these symptoms can appear up to five years before diagnosis and help doctors start treatment early.  FOX 41
  • Albertsons Companies recalled its store-made bowtie pasta products on Sept. 30 because they may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes—customers are advised to discard the items and clean any surfaces that touched them.  FOX 41
  • Officials recalled 58 million pounds of frozen corn dogs and sausage products after wooden pieces were found in the batter and five injuries occurred, prompting warnings to check labels for recall codes. Tyson Foods initiated the recall Tuesday, Sept. 30—consumers are urged to discard or return any affected products found in freezers, schools, and military facilities.  FOX 41
