EDUCATION NEWS

  • Esperanza Lemos and Pam Shelton are running for the Yakima School District board seat as incumbent Graciela Villanueva is not running again. Lemos, a retired teacher who now leads education at Radio KDNA, and Shelton, a bookkeeper and substitute teacher with over a decade of experience, have proposed plans for better funding and safer school facilities—aiming to give more help to students and staff.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Anna Saenz, a middle school teacher, and Monica Guillen, a social worker who also runs a youth wrestling program, are running for the Sunnyside school board District 1 seat in the general election on Nov 4. Both candidates plan to focus on balanced budgets and school safety upgrades—while the current board member is running for city council.  Yakima Herald-Republic

HEALTH NEWS

  • Over 300 people joined the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Yakima on October 11th, which raised about $50,000—77% for national research and 23% for local support—to boost awareness of Alzheimer’s among the more than 120,000 affected in Washington. Don Sweet and walk manager Julie Reathaford shared personal stories as participants carried colored flowers to honor the impact of the disease.  FOX 41
