Good morning, Yakima. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 16th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A fundraiser is held today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Single Hill Brewing in Yakima to raise money for Guadalupe Cordova’s mother to add two bedrooms to her home for the six children she now cares for after Guadalupe was murdered in a domestic violence incident; the silent auction runs from 6:15 to 8 p.m. and includes a moment of silence and $1 draft beer donations.  Yakima Herald-Republic

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Two women with deep wine industry experience have taken on leadership roles at Hyatt Vineyards in Zillah as General Manager Ashley Koempel hired former Owen Roe colleague Samantha Mallery as winemaker to infuse fresh ideas—supporting the family legacy established by Lynda Hyatt and her late husband—from a renewed outlook.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Five Guys in Yakima closed suddenly without warning, leaving fans shocked and empty streets where burgers once drew crowds. The unannounced shutdown follows a pattern of similar local business closures — a sign of growing instability in the area.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

  • Yakima Valley Emergency Management got a $7,931.50 Local Heroes Grant from Gesa Credit Union on Wednesday—one of 52 awards totaling over half a million dollars in 2025. HEALTH NEWS

  • The Valley Mall held its second annual Witches Night Out fundraiser on October 15 from 6-9 p.m.—all funds went to the Wellness House to aid cancer patients with counseling, exercise, and stress management. • Researchers reported on October 15 that a new AI tool—trained on more than 1.6 million ER records and evaluated on nearly 720,000 visits—predicted which children were likely to develop sepsis within 48 hours. Doctors hope the tool will help start early treatment and reduce the high death rate among children with sepsis.  FOX 41
  • A new evidence review published in BMJ Oncology found that cancer patients who felt lonely had a 34% higher chance of dying from any cause and an 11% higher chance of dying from cancer, with data from nearly 1.6 million overall cases and more than 2.1 million cancer-specific cases. Researchers said the findings suggest that social isolation may affect treatment outcomes and that health providers could consider outreach to support these patients.  FOX 41
  • Recorded voices of mothers read to premature babies in the NICU boosted growth in a key language pathway in their brains, as MRI scans before discharge showed more development in the left arcuate fasciculus – the study provides evidence that hearing mom’s voice helps improve early brain development.  FOX 41
