- ➤ A group of girls aged four to 13 raised $1,200 for Meals on Wheels by hosting four events in a six-week community service project with Sparkles and Lace. - ➤ Catholic Charities of Central Washington is recruiting volunteers to serve as senior companions for older adults facing loneliness, health challenges, or limited mobility in nine counties—volunteers will help with daily tasks and provide emotional support. - ➤ Yakima School District and the Yakima Education Association reached a three-year contract that provides a 2.5% salary increase plus an extra optional day in the 2025-26 school year while planning additional raises and a $500,000 benefit in later years. - ➤ Safe Yakima Valley — partnering with the Washington Traffic Safety Commission — launched a campaign to promote sober driving among young adults after a survey found 94% choose not to drive impaired. - ➤ Pet food manufacturers Foodynamics and Raw Bistro recalled select pet food products on Oct. 23 due to possible salmonella contamination, and the FDA reported that no illnesses have been reported while advising pet owners to discard the items and watch for symptoms such as fever, vomiting or diarrhea—discarding the recalled products is recommended for safety. - ➤ The Washington State Fire Marshal warns that carbon monoxide—the odorless, colorless gas produced by heating, cooking, and generators—causes over 150 deaths annually in the U.S., with over 500 incidents reported last year and two fatalities in Washington; residents are urged to install and test CO detectors on every level of their homes.
