GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Greater Yakima Chamber of Commerce has paused its planned move to the downtown property it purchased earlier and will continue leasing its current site next to the convention center — renovation costs have exceeded expectations. • A federal judge ordered the government to use emergency funds to keep SNAP payments going after a shutdown threatened to stop food stamp benefits for nearly 42 million people. The decision (the first of its kind in over 50 years) means that SNAP will continue even as a budget deadlock affects federal funding.  FOX 41
  • The Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office is urging Yakima residents to test and maintain their smoke alarms ahead of the time change when clocks are set back one hour tonight (working alarms can halve the risk of dying in a home fire).  1280 NewsTalk KIT

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA announced on October 31 that it will ease rules for approving biosimilars by eliminating the need for costly clinical trials—steps that could nearly halve approval timelines and save research costs. The changes are expected to boost competition and help lower drug prices for patients.  FOX 41
  • Scientists from UCLA found that children with more gut bacteria—Clostridiales and Lachnospiraceae—had changes in their brains linked to anxiety and depression; the study looked at stool samples and brain scans from 55 kids in Singapore. Future research will test if eating different foods or taking probiotics can lower this risk—new tests may soon help protect mental health—by studying the cause and effect more closely.  FOX 41
