  • Toppenish School District will develop a new strategic framework with help from ESD 105 (which supports south central schools) and invites parents, students and community members to join focus groups to shape the district’s future; interested parties must submit an interest form by Friday, November 28.  NonStopLocal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers on First St between Walnut St + Pacific Ave will face lane closures from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, November 4th to 7th while Yakima crews fill cracks in the road. Traffic delays are expected and drivers are advised to use alternate routes while access to nearby homes and businesses is maintained.  KIMA
  • The Department of Ecology halted surface water use for nearly all growers in the Yakima Basin from Oct. 6 to Oct. 31 due to record low reservoir levels, affecting farms and towns alike. HEALTH NEWS

Patients are advised to verify that their provider is licensed and experienced before undergoing treatment.  FOX 41
  • Researchers from Wake Forest found that a three-pronged blood test measuring lipoprotein a, remnant cholesterol, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein nearly triples heart attack risk when all markers are high. The study analyzed data from over 300,000 participants over 15 years and will be discussed at an American Heart Association meeting on November 10 — the tests are not part of routine screenings but are available at most labs.  FOX 41
  • A study published yesterday found that adults with insomnia using melatonin for more than a year had 90% higher odds of heart failure—researchers noted that these users were also 3.5 times more likely to be hospitalized for heart issues. Health experts advised patients to consult a doctor before taking melatonin long-term—especially since the supplement is available over the counter.  FOX 41
  • A Mayo Clinic study found that nearly 84% of women aged 45 to 60 did not seek help for menopause symptoms like sleeplessness, hot flashes, and weight gain—most preferred to manage these issues on their own, with only 28% receiving treatment. Researchers also noted that many women were unaware of treatment options and that some doctors did not fully explain care, prompting calls for better education.  FOX 41
  • A recent U.S. visa fee hike made it more expensive for rural hospitals to hire foreign doctors—researchers found that nearly twice as many rural doctors work on H-1B visas, which may reduce access to care in these communities.  FOX 41
