COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The mobile market provided free groceries to over 200 families in Yakima today at 11 a.m. off Willow Street to help those affected by SNAP cuts—organizers from Second Harvest will hold another event in Kennewick from noon to 2 p.m. on November 6.  KIMA
  • Yakima Valley residents answered a local poll asking what they often go overboard on—responses included overbuying hunting supplies, overpacking for trips, overeating, overspending, and giving too many Christmas gifts.   • The City of Yakima and the Downtown Association invite residents to nominate evergreen trees (15 to 25 feet tall with easy access) for the Community Christmas Tree in downtown Yakima. The selected tree will be cut and lifted by crane for installation at Millennium Plaza for a tree-lighting ceremony on Dec. 7 with final selection made by Nov. 14.  NonStopLocal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Legends Casino Hotel will host Wheel of Fortune Live on Sunday, November 16 at its events center starting at 2 p.m., where ticket holders can win $10,000 or a trip to Hawaii or Paris. To take part, contestants must register online or in person two hours before the show and the event is 18+—no cameras are allowed and the venue is smoke-free and alcohol-free.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wapato and Yakima school boards earned the 2025 Board of Distinction award from the Washington State Directors’ Association for strong leadership and fairness. They will be celebrated at a conference in Seattle Nov. 20—22.  KIMA
  • In Tuesday's unofficial school board election, Ryan Beckett led with 2,782 votes (54 percent) while Pam Shelton led with 3,277 votes (65 percent). Officials reported that 22,232 ballots were counted and 3,900 remain, with winners set to serve four year terms.  Yakima Herald-Republic

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State officials said they trapped nearly three times as many Japanese beetles this year as in 2024—72,626 beetles with most caught in Grandview, the center of the infestation. Fewer local residents allowed free insecticide treatments, and WSDA said more must be done to protect farms and gardens.  Yakima Herald-Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Yakima City Council is seeking volunteers for positions on the Arts Commission, Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee, Lodging Tax Advisory Committee and Tree City USA Board. Interested residents must send their applications to the City Clerk’s Office by the end of business on November 7 — the Council will review submissions to appoint new members.  KIMA
  • As winter settles in, Yakima residents must use snow blowers only after 6 a.m. to avoid a $500 fine imposed by local noise ordinances—rules that are stricter than the state standard.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

HEALTH NEWS

  • PNWU is hosting its first annual diabetes symposium on Nov. 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Butler-Haney Hall auditorium at 200 University Parkway—experts will offer talks on management, nutrition, mental health and exercise alongside vendors and wellness giveaways at this free event.  Yakima Herald-Republic
