  • Fruitvale Community Market reopened in March 2023 to fight food insecurity by giving healthy meals to local residents and now serves up to 1,200 people daily. The market will be open on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.—Manager Reynaldo Macedo said they are ready for the extra demand.  FOX 41

  • Retail expert Emma Collins said shoppers should plan ahead by writing a list of needed items and signing up for loyalty programs to secure Black Friday deals. She advised checking in-person stores too—local shops might offer special discounts that are not available online.  FOX 41

  • The Yakima Valley Visitors Center has highlighted five hidden winter wine gems that show local wine culture, including events at Treveri Cellars and Terra Blanca Winery.   • The Yakima County Development Association held its first economic development strategy meeting at the Kaminski Conference Center at Yakima Valley College—Executive Director Johnathan Smith said the meeting aimed to find job opportunities, remove barriers, and suggest projects in AG tech and advanced manufacturing.  KIMA
  • Gas prices in Yakima increased by 1.7 cents to $3.90 per gallon as of November 17 from a survey of 91 stations—this is 27.5 cents above last year's rate and 19.8 cents below last month's level while the national average dipped slightly.  KIMA

  • New drone footage released by local photographer Sky's Shutter shows Rattlesnake Ridge is still slowly shifting — the video captured in November shows a 20-acre block of Columbia River basalt moving along a weak sediment layer — while geologists continue monitoring the slide with reduced monthly meetings.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After the federal government reopened, Yakima food banks saw a drop in client demand while still handling extra SNAP processing and volunteer shortages—effects of the shutdown that continue to strain resources into the holiday season.  KIMA

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA limited Elevidys after two teens died from liver failure—only boys age 4 and older who can still walk may receive the treatment, and doctors must check liver function for three months after treatment. Sarepta said it had already stopped shipping the therapy to non-ambulatory boys due to safety concerns.  FOX 41
  • Medical experts say thyroid cancer is highly treatable as most cases are found early with excellent outcomes. Revised guidelines now favor less aggressive surgery for low-risk patients—while newer therapies will improve options for advanced cancers.  FOX 41
  • Catholic Charities and the Office of the Insurance Commissioner will host a Medicare help event at West Valley Library from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday—attendees can ask questions and schedule appointments ahead of the Dec. 7 open enrollment deadline. The event comes as Community Health Plan discontinues two plans affecting about 1,850 beneficiaries and MultiCare introduces new insurance restrictions that may require changes for some patients.  Yakima Herald-Republic
