COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 26th Annual Yakima Holiday Lighted Parade takes place Sunday, Dec. 7 at 6:00 p.m. along Yakima Avenue with over 100 lighted vehicles and more than 5,000 expected spectators. Parking along the route is closed from 4:00 p.m. to ensure traffic safety.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • The Yakima Valley Community Foundation launched the Harvest Hope Fund to help working families in Yakima and Kittitas face food insecurity—worsened by a government shutdown and SNAP suspensions. The fund will provide support to those in need.  NonStopLocal
  • Yakima Parks and Recreation will host its sixth annual drive-thru Letters to Santa event at the City’s Public Works facility (2301 Fruitvale Blvd.) on Saturday, Dec. 13 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.; drivers must follow a designated route with police managing traffic.  KIMA

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Traffic at 16th and River Road was disrupted by a water main break on Wednesday morning, and Yakima Police reported one lane remained open on North 16th Avenue while River Road east stayed closed — drivers were urged to use alternate routes.  Yakima Herald-Republic

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Yakima Symphony Orchestra has launched its Year-End Challenge to match donations up to $130,000 for its concert programs. It will host the Holiday Spectacular on Dec. 7 at 4 p.m. at the Capital Theater.  KIMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Zillah School District supports 69 migrant students with extra academic help, family nights, and health services to keep them on track when families move for seasonal work — the program also builds parent leadership through a dedicated action committee.  Apple Valley News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After a strong community outcry over planned budget cuts, Council reversed its decision today, funding the Harman Center for one year + securing support for Washington Fruit Place and Lions Pool through Feb. 2026. HEALTH NEWS

  • Great Lakes Cheese Co. Inc. recalled its shredded cheese from major retailers in Washington due to metal fragment risks; the recall began on Oct. 3 and was upgraded to a Class II risk on Dec. 2 (the FDA advises consumers to dispose of or return affected products).  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • Researchers found that children of mothers with eating disorders had a 26% higher chance of school-age asthma and a 25% increased risk of preschool wheeze using data from 131,500 mother-child pairs, published Wednesday, Dec. 3. The study suggests that prenatal care should include eating disorder screening.  FOX 41
  • Stanford research of over 282,500 older adults finds that those who got the shingles vaccine had a 3.1% lower risk of early memory problems and a 29.5% lower risk of death from dementia. Experts say further studies are needed to check the vaccine's brain health benefits.  FOX 41
