  • After record-breaking floods washed 300 feet of US 12 into the Naches River four days ago, construction crews are repairing damaged roads and paths in Yakima Valley.  Apple Valley News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Camp Prime Time is chipping Christmas trees into mulch at Pape Machinery daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. until Sunday, Jan. 4, to cut landfill waste and support free camping for families with special needs. The pile holds about 40–50 trees and is expected to grow by Sunday.  NonStopLocal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Route 10 near Thorp was closed after a rockfall on Dec. 26 and remains closed pending further inspection by state transportation officials + a local detour is available.  Yakima Herald-Republic

  • Wapato native Jennifer Cruz (Harvard Ph.D. graduate) works at the New York Academy of Medicine while using her research to ease rural health care challenges, including breast cancer screening barriers, in communities like Wapato and the Yakima Valley.   • A study of over 1.8 million U.K. patients found head injuries increased the risk of a suicide attempt by 21% within 12 months, prompting researchers to urge suicide risk assessments for head injury patients + improved mental health support.  FOX 41
  • Research shows that antibiotics used for traveler’s diarrhea are becoming less effective as bacteria develop resistance, with rates varying by region. Health experts advise those planning trips to use over-the-counter remedies and consult a doctor before taking antibiotics.  FOX 41
  • A study found that seniors in impoverished neighborhoods spend 9% fewer days at home after a hip fracture than those in wealthier areas, highlighting the need for community-based recovery supports.   • A study by Ohio State University on Dec. 29 found that questioning doubts about big goals increased people’s commitment when done carefully. The research, published online in Self & Identity, suggests that asking oneself if uncertainty is valid may help steer personal decisions.  FOX 41
