  • Second Harvest's mobile market (supported by local volunteers) provided free fresh food to over 200 Yakima residents at Amigos de Altísimo on January 6; the mobile market will return on Wednesday, Feb. 25.  FOX 41

CULTURE NEWS

  • Yakima’s Fan Fest Northwest returns to the Convention Center on Aug. 8 and Aug. 9. The two-day event will feature comics, movies, gaming, and panels while supporting Rod's House (a fundraiser for at-risk youth).  1280 NewsTalk KIT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Union Gap Library hosts free American Sign Language classes for all ages from 6 to 7 p.m. tomorrow, Jan. 8 + a second session is offered on Jan. 22 with no registration required.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • Starting this month, Yakima Valley Museum partners with Lupine Society to offer monthly social studies lessons for homeschool students in grades 3 to 8 on the 2nd Wednesday at 2105 Tieton Drive at ($10 per student). GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld Yakima Union Gospel Mission’s policy that requires employees to follow Christian beliefs, ruling that its faith-based hiring practices are protected by the First Amendment. The decision supports the mission’s operations at its homeless shelter on 1300 N. First St.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • A recent city council meeting saw heated discussion as the Yakima Fire Department faces $1.75 million in budget cuts that may force Station 92 to close—residents and union leaders voiced their concerns.
