COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Yakama Warriors Association will host its annual Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans event Saturday at 1 p.m. at Sarg Hubbard Park—111 S. 18th St.—where community members will gather to honor Vietnam and other military veterans with the national anthem, a Blackhawk helicopter flyover and presentations from service groups before the ceremony concludes with military honors, including a rifle salute and Taps.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • On Friday afternoon, First Baptist Comunidad Cristiana broke ground on the Shiloh Housing Project near Summitview Avenue to create housing for 12 students aged 18 to 24 facing homelessness or other hardships. The project will build four manufactured houses with a courtyard, grill, and small basketball court — costing around $1.2 million with $400,000 already raised — and will offer low-cost rents with student support services.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Residents are invited to attend a community meeting on March 27 at 5:00 p.m. at the new Union Gap Community Center to learn about plans for a new library and center and share their feedback—organizers include Friends of Union Gap Library and Community Center, the City and Yakima Valley Libraries working with USDA Rural Development.  NonStopLocal

  • Dozer Day will be held April 5-6 at the Yakima Fairgrounds—kids can operate full-size heavy machinery under supervision. The Central Washington Home Builder's Association organizes this 10th annual event that also offers a chance to win tickets.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new shop called 509retro is now open inside Flippers Antique Mall at 519 W. Yakima Ave and sells classic video games (from systems like the NES, Super Nintendo, and Nintendo 64) along with retro toys that help locals relive cherished childhood memories.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Average gasoline prices in Yakima rose 12.7 cents per gallon since St. Patrick's Day and reached $3.75 today, based on GasBuddy’s survey of 91 stations. Prices are 1.4 cents lower than a month ago but remain 34.0 cents below last year— the cheapest station was $3.25 on March 23 and the most expensive was $4.55.  KIMA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Yakima Police Department's Community Service Division posted safety tips on Facebook today to help parents install car seats correctly, noting that children must ride rear-facing until age 2, switch to a 5-point harness from 2 to 4, and use a booster until they reach 4'9. The officers warned that common errors like loose straps and misaligned harnesses can increase injury risk and lead to a citation of up to $145, and they invite families to call 575-6200 and press 8 for help.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • State legislators are debating SB 5303 today which would extend the Yakima Basin Integrated Plan for water storage and management until July 1, 2035. Local officials and stakeholders including Senator Judy Warnick and representatives from the Yakama Nation testified in support while some community members opposed the proposal & the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee now considers its future.  KIMA
