Good morning, Yakima. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 28th of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lions Pool is hosting free April Pools Day from 1 to 3 p.m. on April 12th—offering one hour of water safety instruction on life jacket use, rescues, boating safety and hypothermia awareness along with swim time and prizes. Organized by the City of Yakima, the event aims to teach essential skills to keep our swimmers safe.  NonStopLocal
  • Local nonprofit organizations in Yakima Valley have seen a growing demand for red cards—small wallet-sized tools that list rights for interacting with federal immigration agents. Groups like Nuestra Casa and La Casa Hogar will distribute the cards—printed by the Immigrant Legal Resource Center—to help community members understand and exercise their legal protections.  Yakima Herald-Republic

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Yakima reporter looked back on Rainer Square at 24th & Nob Hill and recalled that old stores such as Blockbuster Video and the first Red Robin have given way to newer businesses over the past 17 years (photos and memories highlight the area’s change).  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • The Filipino American Community of Yakima Valley will celebrate the historic hall’s 73rd anniversary on March 29th with a public event — it starts at 2:00 p.m. Attendees can enjoy a gourmet Filipino buffet featuring spiced adobo chicken, pork-belly lechon, and lumpia along with a new officer installation by County Commissioner LaDon Linde, live performances, a fashion show, and museum exhibits.  NonStopLocal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After a state appeals court commissioner issued a stay order, the Sustainable Yakima and Community Integration Committees remain on hold, halting Judge Elliott's decision to reinstate them. Yakima City Council voted five to two last month to repeal the committees and reimplement planning commission changes while the case is reviewed—public input continues from local citizens.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Yakima Police Department announced that K9 Router will receive a custom-made bullet and stab protection vest donated by Vested Interest in K9s Inc. (a non-profit that has provided nearly 6,000 vests nationwide) and will get it within 10 weeks (according to YPD).  NonStopLocal
  • A Washington Supreme Court ruling on Thursday dismissed Mayor Rachel Ruelas's appeal after she missed court deadlines—recall proponents led by city council members can now gather the required signatures to put the measure on the ballot. If enough valid petitions are collected quickly, Mabton may hold a special recall election early this summer or list the measure on the August primary ballot.  Yakima Herald-Republic

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials confirmed 16 people in Yakima County have confirmed or suspected tuberculosis, with seven cases managed by Yakima Health District and nine by Indian Health Services. Officials said symptoms vary and treatment lasts from four to 12 months—daily observation of patients is straining local health resources.  Yakima Herald-Republic
