COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Richland Parks and Recreation hosts an Easter color walk at 9 a.m. with an egg hunt, entertainment and a crafts and cocoa bar at 9:30 a.m.—the Richland Police Department runs a free Bike Rodeo from 1 to 2 to teach safety skills. In Yakima, the Jordan World Circus performs at State Fair Park with two shows today and two shows on Sunday.  FOX 41
  • Today, Yakima Arboretum is hosting a free Arbor Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Yakima Area Arboretum—featuring 30 water-themed educational booths, over 400 free trees, garden expert advice, free toy and soil testing, and a volunteer work party in the rose garden with local vendors offering food.  Apple Valley News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school seniors living in Yakima, Kittitas, Benton, or Franklin counties can apply for a $2,500 college scholarship from Yakima Federal Savings and Loan before April 18th—applications must show top 10% class rank and strong character. About 86 awards will be given to students who enroll in an accredited college this fall—submissions require a one-page letter outlining future plans and challenges.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Pacific Steel and Recycling Yakima is running a recycling drive from April 2nd to April 30th (offering $0.50 per pound for recyclables and donating $0.05 per pound to Rod’s House, a charity for homeless youth) to help the environment and support our community.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • Central Washington is in its third straight year of drought as low snowpack reduces water for farms, fish and residents. Experts say Yakima is especially vulnerable (water storage upgrades may be needed) to manage the ongoing shortages.  NonStopLocal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Travelers on Interstate 82 near Yakima will face detours next week as the Washington State Department of Transportation cleans the Naches and Yakima River bridges—drivers must follow alternate routes starting with a closed eastbound on-ramp near Twin Bridges from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. A single lane on westbound I-82 will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday—no detour is needed during those days.  Yakima Herald-Republic

HEALTH NEWS

  • Former MLB manager Clint Hurdle spoke at the Merrill Scott Symposium in Yakima to share his journey recovering from alcoholism—he said asking for help changed his life and now he supports others on similar paths.  Apple Valley News Now

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Yakima real estate stayed active as 336 homes have sold this year with the median sale price rising to $367,925—up 9.8% from last year. March sales dropped to 123 from 137 last March and 30-year fixed rate mortgages averaged 6.82% on April 7th, showing steady market trends.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
