CRIME NEWS

  • Don Juan Perry, 53, from Spokane, pleaded guilty to second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm on April 17 in Yakima County Superior Court after a gasoline dispute at an AM/PM station led to a dropped robbery charge—his 2017 vehicle theft conviction was noted—and a six-month sentence was recommended with credit for jail time served.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Yakima police are searching for 21-year-old Isreal Barriga Vargas, who fled in a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer after he allegedly shot an 18-year-old at a party on South Keys Road early Sunday—authorities say the victim was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital and the suspect is considered armed and dangerous.  FOX 41

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Sunnyside businesses saw sales drop after ICE detained two people on January 26 which sparked fear on social media—local owners report sales down 30% to 70% causing reduced production, layoffs, and shortened store hours while community resources are being offered to help.  Yakima Herald-Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, a portion of D Street between 3rd Ave and 6th Ave is closed for pedestrian safety improvements, according to Randy Beehler. Traffic is allowed on 5th Ave while the speed limit is reduced to 20 mph (with flaggers helping drivers) and access to homes and businesses remains open (emergency vehicles may pass) during the work.  KIMA
