Good morning, Yakima. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 24th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 75th annual Central Washington Junior Livestock Show will take place from Sunday through Wednesday, April 27-30, at the Toppenish Rodeo Grounds at 500 S. Division St, where children and teens from the Yakima Valley will show beef, sheep, and hogs. The event will include fitting and showing demonstrations on Monday and Tuesday and animal sales with special awards on Wednesday.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • Yakima Bishop Joseph Tyson led two Masses on Monday that reflected on Pope Francis’ death at the Vatican less than 24 hours after many Catholics celebrated Easter and recalled the pontiff’s care for migrants and refugees. The diocese will honor his legacy at the Hispanic Conference for Family Evangelization at the Yakima Valley SunDome from Friday through Sunday — a move aimed at easing fears in the community amid harsh deportation rhetoric.  Yakima Herald-Republic

CULTURE NEWS

  • TV actor Michael Welch, known for roles in Twilight and Z Nation, will appear at Fan Fest Northwest at the Yakima Convention Center on October 11th. The event will bring fans together for cosplay, gaming and sci-fi shows — a key fall celebration for the community.  1280 NewsTalk KIT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Voters approved Proposition 1 with 15,311 in favor and 6,098 against a 0.2% sales tax increase set to fund a $35 million police radio system over the next seven years—votes that followed low turnout of roughly 21,000 ballots. County officials will begin the bidding process soon to upgrade radio communications after past issues delayed dispatch during emergencies.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • Yakima City Council member and Deputy Mayor Matt Brown announced he will run for re-election after focusing on responsible budgeting and neighborhood revitalization during his first term. Filing for office will take place May 5 through 9 at the Yakima County Auditor's Office.  Yakima Herald-Republic

HEALTH NEWS

  • Experts warned that smart vapes — devices that play games, make calls, and track fitness — may be aimed at children because they mix nicotine with fun features. Online sellers offer these gadgets, some with up to 30,000 puffs, and the FDA has asked retailers to stop selling them.  FOX 41
