Good morning, Yakima. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 19th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Don Prest, an Army medic from Naches, flew in a Huey helicopter with three soldiers during the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens and helped rescue survivors and pull victims from the disaster that killed 57 people and filled the Yakima Valley with ash — a brave effort by first responders. He later earned the Army Commendation Medal and continued his work as a paramedic in Prosser and at Hanford.  Yakima Herald-Republic

  • Several fire crews from Kittitas County are heading to fight a wind-driven brush fire at Yakima Training Center near Huntzinger Road south of Vantage—strong winds are pushing the flames toward the Columbia River—officials said.  FOX 41

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Washington’s unemployment rate for April held at 4.4% while Yakima County’s rate was 6.3%, making it one of the highest in the state—data from the State Employment Security Department shows this figure. The report also noted that job gains in Health Services, Professional and Business Services, and Wholesale Trade were partly offset by cuts in non-farm and government roles and a drop in unemployment benefits from March.  KIMA
