COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On May 21, Yakima Association of Faith Communities met at the nearly finished Sikh gurudwara at 4906 Hillcrest Drive in Terrace Heights, where leaders toured the building and discussed a grand opening planned for the coming month. The two-story structure began construction in November 2022 with a cost estimate of $2.5 million and includes a community kitchen (Langar hall) and a worship area.  Yakima Herald-Republic

  • Union Gap police issued an arrest warrant for Jose J Quezada on DV Murder 1st degree and two counts of DV Animal Cruelty 1st degree after officers found 63-year-old Teena Parise and her dogs dead during a welfare check on May 25th; the suspect—known to the victim—fled in a white 2013 Dodge Caravan with California license 9SNU745.  KIMA

  • Donnie Ide, a retired teacher who grew up in Yakima and spent nearly 30 years teaching in Bothell, now volunteers at Davis High and hands out Life Savers each morning+ he brightens the day for students and staff by sharing his positive energy.  Yakima Herald-Republic

HEALTH NEWS

  • Officials from Safe Yakima Valley reported 11 new overdoses in Yakima County in the last 24 hours — adding to a total of 31 overdoses over recent days — and said carfentanil, an opioid 100 times stronger than fentanyl, is likely responsible for the spike.  FOX 41
  • A new study shows that middle-aged adults who lose about 6.5% of their weight lower their risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other serious illnesses. Researchers analyzed data on nearly 23,000 adults from the 1960s onward — and found that diet and exercise changes, not drugs or surgery, brought these benefits.  FOX 41
  • Officials from Safe Yakima Valley reported 11 new overdoses in Yakima County in the last 24 hours with carfentanil suspected as the cause—this spike follows 20 overdoses recorded a week ago. Health officials urge those struggling with opioid addiction to seek treatment with Medications for Opioid Use Disorder—such as methadone or buprenorphine—and counseling support.  NonStopLocal
