COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At Legends Casino Hotel, the casino awarded $1.09 million in community grants to nonprofits that help families, homeless people and veterans, with fewer applicants meeting the new strict criteria compared to last year. The grants ranged from $1,000 to $15,000 and also helped local public safety groups such as Yakima County Fire District 5—enabling them to purchase new equipment.  Yakima Herald-Republic

  • Yakima Police say a hit-and-run collision closed westbound traffic on Nob Hill overpass from 1st6 St. to Ledwich Ave. at 12:35 p.m. — officials advise drivers to use alternate routes.  NonStopLocal

CRIME NEWS

  • Acting U.S. Attorney Richard R. Barker announced that Chief U.S. District Judge Stanley A. Bastian sentenced Jamaal Antwan Pimms to 26 months in prison and 1 year of supervised release for misprision of a felony after he helped conceal the details of disposing of Rosenda Strong’s body following her 2018 murder at the House of Souls in Wapato — facts confirmed by court documents and FBI interviews.  KIMA
  • On May 22 the City of Granger and Granger Police settled a civil sexual assault lawsuit involving former officer Glen Trejo—accused of sexually assaulting a woman while on duty over a year amid claims of a coverup by city officials—for $700,000 as Trejo is no longer with the department.  NonStopLocal

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study released May 28 finds that wildfire smoke increases the risk of heart and lung hospitalizations for up to three months after exposure. The analysis from 15 states — which shows higher risk with increased smoke — leads researchers to call for stronger wildfire management to protect public health.  FOX 41
  • Yakima County emergency services reported 11 overdoses from carfentanil—a drug laced with elephant tranquilizer—in the last 24 hours and 31 overdoses during May 15-21; SAFE Yakima Valley said the drug, which is 10,000 times stronger than morphine and 100 times more potent than fentanyl, is believed to come from the northern border and warned that even two grains can be fatal.  KIMA
