- ➤ The Harman Center will host Yakima’s Active Aging 2025 on June 26 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM to support seniors, caregivers and community members with educational sessions, 45 vendor booths, a free BBQ lunch and raffle prizes at 101 N. 65th Avenue in Yakima—this expo is expected to attract over 300 seniors. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A brush fire near Parker spread to a residential structure in the 200 block of Douglas Lane Friday afternoon—multiple agencies responded and it was the second fire that day after an orchard on North Track Road burned around noon. Yakima Herald-Republic
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Kilmar Abrego Garcia returned to the US after a mistaken deportation from El Salvador and now faces federal charges of human smuggling following a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee — federal prosecutors say he transported illegal migrants including MS-13 members and allege an indictment with claims dating back to 2016 and a gang-related killing. His attorneys dispute the charges and maintain that he is a sheet metal worker who was wrongly handled by immigration authorities. FOX 41
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Seventeen-year-old Jazlin Betancourt graduated early from West Valley High School and will attend Grace College in Indiana where she will join the rugby team despite never having played the sport before. She will also travel to Spain for five weeks with the Washington World Fellows Program this summer—an opportunity that follows her strong interest in accounting and service. Yakima Herald-Republic

- ➤ City officials are urging Yakima residents to conserve water as the ongoing drought affects domestic and irrigation supplies. They noted that water pro-rationing on junior rights began on May 20th and that backup groundwater wells help manage supply during the dry months — steps taken to secure the city’s water resources. - ➤ On Wednesday, Sunnyside City Council held a special meeting to investigate City Manager Mike Gonzalez after he was placed on a 30-day paid leave following controversial comments and conflicting records requests. Interim Fire Chief Cameron Haubrich is handling city duties while the council reviews candidate Blaine Oborn’s credentials and hires a Spokane law firm at $325 per hour to lead the inquiry — deepening the division among city leaders. - ➤ Washington state agencies have launched the Secure Your Load for Safer Roads campaign this week to remind drivers to secure their cargo and prevent crashes after unsecured loads led to 337 crashes and 32 injuries in 2024; WSP troopers will patrol during the first three weekends in June—free cargo nets and a 15% discount on tie-down equipment will be offered at select local events.
