COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Salvation Army Yakima Valley Corps will host a free family event on Tuesday, July 15, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 509 N 4th St — the event will kick off a $750,000 capital campaign to build a new community center and Hope Market food pantry with construction starting in fall and finishing in spring. - ➤ Downtown Zillah hosted its second annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament this past weekend where 428 players in 107 teams from all ages competed for a championship shirt—700 local fans filled the streets. Organizers will donate $2,000 back to the city council and support the local girls basketball team next year—plans are in place to make this an annual event. NonStopLocal
- ➤ Yakima parks will host free summer concerts and movie nights at Franklin Park, Miller Park and Chesterley Park—events include live music like Die Bruder on July 11 at Franklin Park, concerts beginning with La Cuarta Generacion de Tierra Caliente on July 20 at Miller Park, and outdoor movie screenings at Chesterley Park with films such as Moana 2 starting around sunset. Families are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs to enjoy these outdoor activities all summer. FOX 41
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ For about 30 years, a replica statue graced the Liberty Building before it was removed during 1960s renovations and later stored by a local family—its unique design has sparked interest in restoring the piece. A local historian now plans to return the bust to downtown Yakima—fundraising will be needed for repairs and a new base. Yakima Herald-Republic
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Bureau of Indian Affairs and Yakama Nation are weighing two plans to upgrade the old Wapato Diversion Dam that sends water to the Yakama Reservation and helps guide fish safely. One plan will cost about $105 million and keep most of the dam as is while a $245 million option will add a fish screen—construction is expected to start around 2031 if federal funds are approved.
