COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The American Red Cross opened a wildfire evacuation shelter today at the Selah Civic Center—216 S 1st St—in response to the Wixson Fire that led to Level 3 evacuations in parts of Yakima County. Residents who lost their homes can use the shelter and are advised to bring essential items like prescription medications, extra clothing, and hygiene supplies for potential future evacuations.  KIMA
  • A dog named Happy with health issues was featured yesterday as a cheerful pup looking for her forever home in Yakima — she is available for adoption.  KIMA

CRIME NEWS

  • A 39-year-old Uber driver named Mauricio Javier Arechiga was charged with vehicular assault for driving intoxicated and hitting a pedestrian at an unmarked crosswalk on West Nob Hill Boulevard on July 3, and he was released on bail with a $5,000 bond and ordered to install an ignition interlock device—officers reported there was no evidence he braked before the crash.  Yakima Herald-Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Dan Newhouse introduced legislation to designate Astria Toppenish Hospital as a Critical Access Hospital to reduce financial strain and keep essential services running in rural areas. The hospital—serving Toppenish and the Yakama Nation—will receive better Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements to support its care for local residents.  NonStopLocal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Yakima Health Department released reports showing that restaurants in Yakima County consistently passed routine inspections with zero violations from January through May this year — a list of eateries received perfect scores.
