ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • West Valley Fire-Rescue responded to a kitchen fire in a Yakima home yesterday after hot oil ignited material left too close to the burner, which caused significant damage to the wall and ceiling and led to a woman being hospitalized after she used water to try to put out the flames—officials advised turning off the burner and covering the pan with a lid.  FOX 41

CRIME NEWS

  • Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit identified Pedro Leal—67, a Zillah resident killed in a police encounter on July 1 when officers responded to a call at the 200 block of First Avenue after a standoff at a neighbor’s home—and the King County Medical Examiner’s autopsy later classified his death as homicide due to a broken vertebrae and blunt neck trauma.  Yakima Herald-Republic

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Laurie Tuff transformed her Selah lawn into a native plant garden with free design help from the North Yakima Conservation District’s heritage garden program—her project cost about $3,000 and is expected to save water while attracting pollinators in a drought-prone area.  Yakima Herald-Republic
