COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Larry Broderson, a Yakima man, donated his seventh annual palette of water to the Naches Fire Department to help firefighters stay hydrated during hot weather — he continues this tradition in honor of his late wife.  KIMA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Esperanza Lemos, Pam Shelton and Jose Gutierrez are running to fill the Yakima School Board District 1 vacancy after incumbent Graciela Villanueva did not seek re-election. The primary election will be held on Aug. 5 and the top two candidates will advance to the general election on Nov. 4 + only voters registered in the district will receive a ballot with the contest.  Yakima Herald-Republic

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yakima’s sidewalks remain tent-free thanks to local law that bans camping on sidewalks and city properties—violators face up to $1000 in fines or 90 days in jail—in contrast with Portland and Seattle where tents are common.  1280 NewsTalk KIT
  • Cascade Natural Gas began work on a new high-pressure gas mainline on Yakima Avenue near Terrace Heights Drive—causing intermittent lane closures from South 17th Street to South 18th Street. The company will keep access open for local homes and businesses and allow emergency vehicles until the work is expected to finish on August 8.  KIMA
  • The Yakima Fire Department closed South 3rd Avenue between Pine and Spruce because of a hazmat situation + fire crews continue managing the incident.  NonStopLocal
  • Four candidates — incumbent Janice Deccio, Juliet Potrykus, Isidro Sid Reynaga and Jason White — are running for the Yakima City Council District 4 seat as the city faces a large general fund deficit. They will appear on the Aug. 5 primary ballot and the top two will advance to the November election, each offering different ideas on budget cuts and service protections.  Yakima Herald-Republic
