Good morning, Yakima. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 28th of July.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Washington State raised the fine for littering up to one cubic foot from $50 to $125 under a new law aimed at reducing plastic waste—which upgrades the offense to a class two civil infraction and adds to the $93 base penalty for dropping trash on state highways.  NonStopLocal
  • The Yakima City Council voted on July 24 to put a property tax measure on the November 4 ballot that could raise the regular tax levy and generate about $6,000,000 in revenue during 2026 if voters approve it—local residents may apply to serve on one of two committees at the August 4 meeting, with applications accepted through July 31 at noon.  KIMA
  • Starting today, drivers at Yakima Air Terminal-McAllister Field will face parking and lane changes as crews replace three canopies — part of a modernization project that includes a new roof and HVAC system. The work is expected to finish by the end of October — a timeline set under the terminal’s larger upgrade effort.  FOX 41
  • Today the third phase of the 72nd and Washington roundabout project starts in Yakima as the intersection is closed to all traffic until September 12—detours are set on Nob Hill Boulevard, 64th Avenue, and Occidental Road. Traffic delays are expected, and emergency vehicles plus access for nearby homes and businesses will be maintained.  KIMA
  • Washington has enacted a new law that protects Good Samaritans who break into locked vehicles to rescue children, pets and adults with special needs+ the law does not cover farm animals. Rescuers must call 911 and stay with the rescued until help arrives.  NonStopLocal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The CDC reported that measles cases in 39 states have surged nearly five times compared to last year, with some states breaking 1992 records. Washington health officials warn that a drop in school immunization rates — including a more than 4% decline in some districts and only 56% completion in Pacific County — may increase illness risks and urge parents to vaccinate their children.  NonStopLocal
