COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local nonprofit in Yakima is fighting period poverty by making washable feminine hygiene kits for people here and abroad. The Freedom Kits group has grown from 20 to 80 members since 2022—donated nearly 4,000 kits to 12 countries this year and meets monthly for volunteers.  NonStopLocal
  • A Yakima nonprofit called Freedom Kits of Yakima fought period poverty by hand-making washable feminine hygiene kits for those in need both locally and abroad. It grew from 20 to 80 members since 2022 and had sent nearly 4,000 kits to 12 countries—each kit lasting three to five years and including underwear, pads, guards, a washcloth and soap.  FOX 41

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Naches town officials approved a six-month extension request for the library services contract to gain time for new funding and building repairs amid rising costs. They will hold a community forum on Sept. 30—time and location to be determined—to discuss solutions for keeping the library open.  Yakima Herald-Republic

HEALTH NEWS

  • Three cases of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli were linked to Mercado Los Amigos on Fruitvale Boulevard in Yakima and the market closed Sept. 18 while working with Yakima Health District to lower risks—people who ate meat, produce or prepared food there between Sept. 10 and Sept. 18 should seek care if they have stomach cramps or diarrhea.  Yakima Herald-Republic
  • The Yakima Health District reported a case of West Nile virus disease in a resident who was likely exposed to mosquitoes from Yakima County — marking the first human case this year. The case followed a similar report in a local horse on Sept 15, and health officials urge residents to take preventive measures.  Yakima Herald-Republic
