- ➤ Yakima Neighborhood Health Services and the Homeless Network of Yakima County will host the 21st annual Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day candlelight vigil at Millennium Plaza at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, where community members will gather to remember those affected by homelessness while refreshments are served. - ➤ Residents have many holiday events this weekend: tonight, Capitol Theatre hosts Kinky Boots at 7:30 p.m.; tomorrow, a free Granger parade & market and a jazz concert at the Harman Center will delight, while Saturday brings a craft event in Union Gap, a Moxee parade, and a Christmas drag show. - ➤ After rain pushed the Naches River above minor flood stage on Wednesday, officials said water levels peaked near 18.7 feet and warned residents in low-lying areas to stay alert. - ➤ Windmill Farms in Sunnyside has a labor dispute set for the Washington Supreme Court, as the United Farm Workers and former employees (who claim the company retaliated against their right to organize) appeal whether cases will move to private arbitration or a public court. KIMA
- ➤ The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services has announced Disaster Cash Assistance for households affected by flooding in eligible counties, including Yakima. Assistance is available until Jan. 15, and residents can apply by calling 877-501-2233 or visiting a local Community Services Office between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. NonStopLocal
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Triumph Treatment Center reopened its housing facility on Yakima Avenue after nearly $1M in upgrades funded by the Housing Preservation Program, now offering 16 rooms (12 for emergency shelter) for homeless families with children or expecting mothers. - ➤ A person died of influenza in Yakima County, marking the season's first flu death. The patient, over 65 with underlying conditions, died as tests showed a rise in flu positivity from Nov. 30 to Dec. 6, and health officials urge vaccination and good hygiene. Yakima Herald-Republic
